The Great Mouse Detective – Tea and Crumpets, (Root) Beer

Quick links: Tea and Crumpets | (Root) Beer | Verdict

Disney’s take on Sherlock Holmes may not Bendaduck Cumberbottom worthy, but it’s still great. We have the classic British tea and crumpets shown as well as some beer (which isn’t uncommon in Disney). However, I decided to skip eating a mouse like Ratigan’s cat does.

Cheese Crumpets for Toby

Crumpets are usually pan fried and not baked. However Mrs. Judson makes cheese crumpets that resemble muffins.

They also show lots of tea. I don’t drink tea, but if you want to make proper English tea, check out this site.

When I made the crumpets, I actually missed the fact that they were cheese crumpets. But I’m sure if you add a cup of grated cheddar, it’d turn out great. However, even without the cheese, they were great.

Of course, we’re keeping this a kid friendly blog, so we decided to make Root Beer! BUUUUUUUUUT, we hit a snag. First, I didn’t realize how hard it was to get dry ice where I live. Then I found a recipe to make Root Beer with yeast. So I went and got yeast and I was going to get root beer extract, but I couldn’t find any root beer extract! I didn’t have enough time to go somewhere else, so I wasn’t able to make the root beer. I’m sorry if I let you guys down. But here’s a recipe.

Black Cauldron – Apple Porridge, Toad Soup, and Call-back Medieval Recipes

Quick links: Apple Porridge | Toad SoupCall-Back Medieval Recipes | Verdict

I’d say that this is probably one of the most unknown Disney movies ever made. I think Disney has even forgotten they made it. Good thing too, it is probably one of the worst Disney movies. It’s enjoyable at times, but ultimately falls pretty flat. It’s a shame too, because I really liked the books on which it was based growing up. Most of the food featured in this movie we have made before (they aren’t very creative when it comes to medieval-type dishes usually).
Despite the horribleness of the movie, it had lots of firsts. It was the first Disney animated movie to receive a PG rating and it almost got a PG-13 rating, it’s the first not to feature any songs, it’s the first to use computer technology and it’s the first not to feature credits at the beginning of the movie.

Apple Porridge

The first thing shown at the beginning of the movie is some kind of porridge the pig farmer is making for his oracular pig. Although, it apparently isn’t very tasty porridge.

It doesn’t say exactly what’s in it, so I took some liberties of course. Later in the movie, the annoying but charming Gurgi steals an apple from Taran.

So I decided to make some apple-infused porridge. And unlike the film, it turned out pretty good.

Toad Soup

Toward the end of the movie, the group meets a couple of witches. One of them turns Fflewddur Fflam (awesome name, I know) into a frog and tries to stick him in a pot of boiling water.

(Credit: Disney)

(Credit: Disney)

I looked everywhere for a place that sold frog meat, but couldn’t find any. However, I did see that a local Chinese restaurant (and a pretty famous and good one at that) called Lao Sze Chaun has some frog dishes. So I went there and ordered some frog soup.

IMG_20150728_122342 IMG_20150728_122409

Frog, unsurprisingly, tastes a lot like chicken, but very bony. I actually wasn’t able to eat much of the dish because it was UNBELIEVABLY spicy. One of the spiciest things I have ever tried. But if you’re ever in Chicago, I recommend you go to Lao Sze Chaun. Just try one of their other dishes.

Call-Back food

Being a movie set in the middle-ages, they showed the staple cooked ham and turkey.

We have made a couple of different recipes of ham and turkey. So I’ll leave the links to those recipes here.

Willie’s Medieval Chicken from Mickey and The Beanstalk

Will it Raise an Army of the Dead?

The porridge was really really good. I guess I didn’t make it exactly to the specification of the movie…unless people in the movie just don’t like sweet porridge.

Frog tastes like dark-meat chicken. Not bad.

Fox and The Hound – Fresh-from-the-Cow Milk, Raspberry Jam, Foxy Birthday Cake

Quick links: Fresh Cow Milk | Raspberry Jam | Foxy Birthday Cake | Verdict

I swear I didn’t cry when the widow drove Tod out to leave him in the forest. I was cutting onions…cuz this is a food blog. No crying here, just onions. Man, this movie is good, and so sad. It could be because dogs and foxes are so cute. There wasn’t too much food in the movie, but the highlight was the widow’s raspberry jam!

There really isn’t a recipe besides buying a cow, and milking it. But we wanted to experience what Tod experienced. Selling raw milk is illegal here, except if the milk is sold directly from the farm. So we drove 1.5 hrs outside the city to a dairy farm and got a gallon. Man, it was delicious. So rich and creamy. Some people even claim it’s better for you. So if you’re in an area where you can get some fresh milk, I highly recommend it.

We’re not sure exactly what it is, other than it is some red substance in a pot. I figure, why not make some raspberry jam. It makes sense that the widow would be making something like that.

I had no idea that making raspberry jam was so easy! It turned out delicious.

Will it Make us Best of Friends?

The milk was amazing. The raspberry jam might be one of my favorite recipes. We tried it on crepes that day too and it was divine. Our dog loved the foxy cake (and it wasn’t HORRIBLE for human consumption).

Now go watch Fox and the Hound. It’s on Netflix.

The Rescuers – Moonshine and Gingersnaps

Quick links: Luke’s Moonshine (non-alcoholic) | Penny’s Gingersnaps |  Verdict

It had been a LOOOONG time since I had seen The Rescuer’s. One of my favorite Disney movies as a kid was The Rescuer’s Down Under, but I never had a huge affinity toward the original Rescuer’s movie. Watching it again made me like it a bit more. It was a very charming movie. It’s also on Netflix right now if you want to [re]watch it.

Luke’s Moonshine (Non-Alcoholic)

Louisiana Muskrats make the best moonshine. That’s a well-known fact. And if it weren’t for Luke’s moonshine, Evinrude the dragonfly would have failed. Luke’s moonshine actually helped out a few people. Giving them insane energy with a spicy kick.

Keeping with this family-friendly blog, I tried to find a good base to start off with for making a non-alcoholic moonshine that would produce the desired effects of Luke’s moonshine. Through my searching, I found a recipe based on one of my absolute favorite non-disney franchises, Harry Potter. Firewhiskey. I found a recipe and tried making it. It didn’t turn out the greatest. I modified it to fit more of a Rescuer’s theme. This recipe will definitely take some reworking though.

Ingredients
  1. 2¼ cups all-purpose flour
  2. 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  3. 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  4. 1½ teaspoons baking powder
  5. 1/8 teaspoon kosher salt
  6. ½ cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  7. 1 cup sugar
  8. 1 Extra Large Egg
  9. 1/3 cup dark molasses
  10. 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Make the dough (You can do this part up to three days in advance.)
  1. SIFT the flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, baking powder and salt together in a medium bowl. Set aside.
  2. PLACE the butter and sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Beat on medium speed until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  3. SWITCH the mixer to low speed and gradually add the egg, molasses and vanilla extract. Increase the speed to medium and beat until smooth.
  4. SWITCH the mixer to low speed and add the dry ingredients in 3 additions, pulsing the mixer to incorporate each addition before adding the next one.
  5. TURN the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface. Knead a few times to incorporate any crumbs.
  6. DIVIDE the dough in half. Roll each half into a log about 1½ inches in diameter and 12 inches long. As you roll, gently push the ends toward the center to prevent air pockets and to keep the logs at an even thickness.
  7. WRAP the logs in plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm, at least 3 hours or up to 3 days.
Bake the cookies
  1. PREHEAT the oven to 400°F. Line the bottoms of two 12″ x 18″ sheet pans with parchment paper.
  2. REMOVE the logs from the refrigerator and unwrap them. Using a ruler and a sharp knife, cut each log into rounds ¼ inch thick. If the dough crumbles as you cut it, reshape each slice.
  3. PLACE the rounds on the prepared pans, spacing them 2 inches apart. Bake on the middle shelves of the oven, rotating the pans 180° halfway through the baking time, until the cookies are set but soft enough to hold a slight indentation when pressed with a fingertip (about 7 to 10 minutes).
  4. LET cool completely on the pans on wire racks. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. Yield: 50-60 2-inch cookies.
